Canada To Issue $100K Social Distancing Fine Over Backyard Party

On April 1, Brampton, Ontario, Canada Mayor Patrick Brown announced that the city looks to issue a $100,000 social distancing fine, after one resident held a backyard party during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

While taking to Facebook Live, Mayor Brown shared, “[Tuesday] night, a call came in to 3-1-1 about a backyard party of 20 people who have shown complete disregard for the physical distancing requirements of public health.”

He adds, “This is why we have fines. If someone is going to be reckless with their community, causing it to spread, endangering the lives of neighbors, family and loved ones, there’s going to be consequences. It will be up to the Justice of the Peace to decide and it can be as high as $100,000. This is too serious for anyone to be reckless and foolish”

Furthermore, Mayor Brown followed with directions on how residents can report violations of the new physical distancing bylaw, whose fines begin at $500 and stretch to the $100,000 mark.

Mayor Brown explains, “If residents wish to report a non-compliant business, the use of City-owned facilities that are closed (other than essential services) or gatherings of more than five people, they are asked to call 311. A bylaw enforcement officer and/or security personnel will investigate the complaint to ensure compliance and may lay charges when appropriate.”
