California To Release 3,500 Prisoners Early Due to Coronavirus

The State of California is planning to release 3,500 prisoners early due to officials worrying about overcrowding amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

According to TMZ, the inmates will be released early due to prisons is one of the worst places to be in during a viral outbreak. Also, prisons in the state are kept in unsanitary conditions that can lead to prisoners contracting various illnesses. Officials are expected to release 3,500 prisoners who are currently serving time for nonviolent offenses and others who are expected to be out within 60 days.

However, the state has blocked transfers of county jail inmates to state prisons and 600 inmates will be moved out of dorms.

One inmate told TMZ that the conditions in Los Angeles County Men’s Central Jail were horrific and he was serving time for a carjacking. Another stated they were not told about the coronavirus outbreak or measures to prevent the spread of the virus.
