California Serial Killer ‘I-5 Strangler’ Strangled In Prison

The story of Roger Reece Kibbe, the California serial killer better known as the “I-5 Strangler,” has ended with an ironic twist. An autopsy reveals that Kibbe’s cause of death is listed as him being strangled, himself, in prison. He’s now died like he killed.

The California Department of Corrections say early Sunday (Feb. 28), a Mule Creek State Prison officer found the 81-year-old “unresponsive on the floor,” and “observed [Kibbe’s cellmate] Jason Budrow, 40, standing in the cell with him.” Budrow, who is serving a life sentence without the chance of parole for first-degree murder in Riverside County, is the main suspect in the investigation.

Kibbe, who murdered at least seven women during a 10-year rampage, was initially sentenced to 25 years-to life in prison in May 1991. He was first picked up after strangling a 17-year-old runaway from Seattle.  He was later named a suspect in six other killings — all victims who he picked up along the 5 freeway in California.
