California Becomes First State To Approve Mail-In Ballots Ahead Of November 2020 Election

On Friday (May 8), California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that the entire state will be asked to vote by mail-in ballots during the November 2020 election, making it the first state to approve the plan.

The new executive order, which will be sent out to over 20 million residents, arrives amid fears of a continued spread of the novel coronavirus; and ensures that every registered voter in the state can still participate and have their vote accounted for prior to election day. For those who wish to vote in person, they will have to comply with strict social distancing measures.

Newsom stated, “There’s a lot of excitement around this November’s election in terms of making sure that you can conduct yourself in a safe way, and make sure your health is protected.” Additionally, the plan pushed by Newsom, a Democrat, has been met with criticism by the Republican National Committee; claiming it’s reviewing its “legal options to ensure the integrity of the election.”
