Speaking for the first time as a member of the Phoenix Mercury WNBA franchise since arriving back on US soil, Brittney Griner was left in tears as she looked back on her journey.

During the press conference, Griner spoke about her Russian detainment and expressed gratitude for the United States’ effort to bring her back home. Griner also thanked the media for the exposure she was given which played a role in her release but she also demanded the media to attend and cover the WNBA in the same fashion.

Further into her conference, Griner was asked if she would ever play basketball overseas again. She confidently responded, “I’m never going overseas to play again unless I’m representing my country at the Olympics.”
“If I make that team, that would be the only time I would leave the U.S. soil, and that’s just to represent the USA,” the basketball star clearly explained.

She went on to say, “I’ll say this, the whole reason a lot of us go over is the pay gap,” Griner said. “A lot of us go over there to make an income, to support our families, to support ourselves. So I don’t knock any player that wants to go overseas and make a little bit extra money. I’m hoping that our league continues to grow, and with as many people in here right now covering this, I hope you continue, like I said, to cover our league, bring exposure to us.”

Ultimately, Griner is hoping that the league will pay more attention to their craft and invest in it so player won’t have to go overseas. “If you haven’t watched before, we have a really good craft in ourselves in the WNBA, and it’s a shame that we have to leave our families for holidays,” she added.

Although she’s “no stranger to challenges,” Griner admits “you’re missing everything being away,” she said. “But at the same time, as much as I would love to pay my light bill with the love of the game, I can’t. So I think that’s probably one of the biggest reasons people are still going overseas, and that’s why I was there. So hopefully that changes.”

More On Griner’s Russian Detainment

As we previously reported, Griner was detained on Feb. 17 after the Russian authorities claimed she was carrying hashish oil in her luggage at an airport near Moscow. Griner was traveling to Russia to rejoin her professional team, UMMC Yekaterinburg, which she played for during the W.N.B.A. off-season. After being locked up for months, she was found guilty in August of trying to smuggle illegal narcotics into Russia and was sentenced to nine years in a penal colony.

Thankfully, Griner, 32, was exchanged for Viktor Bout, a Russian arms dealer known as the Merchant of Death, who had been serving a 25-year sentence for allegedly conspiring to sell weapons to people who said they planned to kill Americans.

Griner has thanked President Biden, her wife and supporters for sticking by her side and never giving up the fight to bring her back home.
