Britney Spears Hulu Documentary Reveals Torture and Misogyny Inflicted By Media & Society
Hulu‘s shocking documentary “Framing Britney Spears” follows Spears’ rise to fame and the #FreeBritney movement focused on her ongoing conservatorship.
The documentary explores the suffering Britney went through at the hands of society and the media at a time when mental health was not being explored, and the star was being exploited for money.
Britney was constantly sexualized and attacked for any decision she made in her life. One particular interview showed the effects of this on Britney. A clip from a 2003 primetime interview with ABC News’ Diane Sawyer pushed the then-22-year-old to break down after being questioned about her breakup with Justin Timberlake.
Timberlake publicly embarrassed the tsar and accuse her of cheating. In the interview Sawyer asked Spears, “You broke his heart, you did something that caused him so much pain, so much suffering. What did you do?”

She also questioned Spears about a comment made by the then-first lady of Maryland, who’d said she would shoot Britney if she had the chance.
Sawyer claimed the comment was because “It’s because of the example for kids and how hard it is to be a parent.” Britney was visibly upset, and unfortunately, this was just one of many interviews that belittle the star.
Sawyer is no under fire for exploiting Britney as did many others in the media.
The doc also explores Britney’s mental health breakdown and how society used this as another opportunity to take advantage of her.
