British Man Reportedly Drowns After Wife Flirts With Another Man On Butt-Dialed Call
Gareth Rees, a 49-year-old British man with a phobia of water, reportedly drowned after overhearing his wife, Claire Rees, flirting with another man on a butt-dialed call. It’s noted that Rees suspected his wife was romantically involved with someone else, and the call only confirmed his suspicion.
While house-sitting for a millionaire friend of his who was vacationing in France, Rees received the accidental call from his wife, as she held a “sexually suggestive” conversation with a new lover, per an inquest. After the call, Rees decided to take a dip in his friend’s pool, despite his fear of water and not knowing how to swim. Once she realized that she’d shared her romantic talk with her husband, Mrs. Rees fled a lunch date with her new friend, Glen Ryan, and rushed to her house-sitting husband to talk to him. On arrival, she found his alcohol-filled and lifeless body in the water.

In the inquest, she says, “I feel really bad about it now but my friends and I had joked earlier because Gareth had texted me to say he was going for a dip in the pool. He cannot swim, he hated water, he had a phobia — we thought he was joking. If the pocket dial had anything to do with his death, that is something I have to live with. I have had to make my peace with it.” Pathologist Dr. Robert Chapman has since confirmed that Rees passed from drowning after consuming a dangerous amount of alcohol.
Dr. Karen Henderson, the assistant coroner, adds, “It was clear he was upset that she was moving on, he had overheard remarks about him that were not complimentary and had the realization that his marriage was not going to be recoverable. However, I have no evidence that there was an intention to end his life, he had no known history of mental health problems and no note was left.”

Speaking on her husband, Mrs. Rees says, “Gareth was a lovely person, he was the best stepfather to my son. We had both drifted and it was my son that said he could not cope with the arguing. That was the nail in the coffin.”
