Passengers aboard a Singapore Airlines flight experienced a startling mid-air incident, resulting in one fatality and several injuries.

The flight, which was en route from London to Singapore, encountered severe turbulence, according to local reports, and was forced to divert and land at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, Thailand. Singapore Airlines confirmed the unfortunate news, stating that there were a total of 211 passengers and 18 crew members aboard the Boeing 777-300ER.

In a Facebook statement, the company expressed its condolences to the affected passengers and their families. They provided details about the incident, stating, “We can confirm that there are injuries and one fatality on board the Boeing 777-300ER. There were a total of 211 passengers and 18 crew on board,” the company said.

“Singapore Airlines flight #SQ321, operating from London (Heathrow) to Singapore on 20 May 2024, encountered severe turbulence en route. The aircraft diverted to Bangkok and landed at 1545hrs local time on 21 May 2024,” it added.

Singapore Airlines, which has had a relatively good safety record in recent years, recorded a total of seven incidents, per the Aviation Safety Network The last recorded fatalities for one of the company’s flights occurred in October 2000, where 83 people lost their lives, CNBC notes.

Singapore’s Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat said the government will be providing assistance to the passengers and their families.

“I am deeply saddened to learn about the incident onboard Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 from London Heathrow to Singapore,” he posted in a statement on Facebook. “My deepest condolences to the family of the deceased.”
