A tragic situation out of Annandale, Virginia has people across the country shaken, especially given who’s involved.

Justin Fairfax, once a high-profile political figure, is accused of killing his wife before taking his own life in what police are calling a murder-suicide inside their home.

According to authorities, everything unfolded just after midnight. Police say Fairfax shot his wife, Cerina Fairfax, multiple times in the basement. After that, he went upstairs to the primary bedroom and shot himself. And what’s even more heartbreaking, their kids were home. Both of them. Teenagers.

Sources close to the investigation say the couple’s son was the one who called 911 just after midnight. At the time, he reportedly believed his mother had been stabbed. But when officers got to the scene, they found bullet casings near Cerina’s body. Not long after, they discovered Justin upstairs with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police say this wasn’t some long argument that escalated over time, it all happened fast.

Now, behind the scenes, though, things had already been tense. The couple had been dealing with a divorce, described by police as messy and ongoing. Fairfax had recently been served paperwork tied to that situation.

Even though they were still living under the same roof, they weren’t together in the same way anymore. They had separated and were staying in different bedrooms. Cerina had officially filed for divorce last July, according to reports.

Now two young people are left trying to make sense of something that doesn’t make sense.
