Larry Nassar , the disgraced sports doctor who was convicted of sexually abusing female gymnasts, was stabbed multiple times in a federal prison in Florida, according to a report by the Associated Press.

Two people familiar with the situation told the outlet the attack went down Sunday at United States Penitentiary Coleman in Sumter County, Florida. It happened following an altercation with another incarcerated person at the lockup.

As of Monday morning, the 59-year-old was said to be in stable condition after being stabbed in the back and chest. Further details haven’t been shared as the close sources are not authorized to publicly discuss details of the attack or the ongoing investigation at this time.

More On Larry Nassar And His Crimes

Nassar was a doctor of osteopathic medicine who performed osteopathic manipulation. When doing that, doctors use their hands to move a patient’s muscles and joints with techniques that include stretching, gentle pressure, and resistance. Nassar was accused in criminal complaints of sexual abuse but maintained he was performing legitimate medical procedures.

The agency had become aware of allegations against him in 2015, and he was arrested by Michigan State University police more than a year later.

In addition to that, he was sentenced in federal court in 2017 to 60 years in prison on charges of possessing child sex abuse material.

He was later convicted of sexually assaulting members of the US team, including Olympic gold medalists Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, and McKayla Maroney in 2018. During victim impact statements, several athletes testified that during Nassar’s decades of sexual abuse, they had told adults what was going on, including coaches and athletic trainers, but sadly went unreported.

More than 100 women collectively sought more than $1 billion from the federal government for the FBI’s failure to stop the doctor when agents became aware of allegations against him. As a result of that, Michigan State, which was accused of missing chances over many years to stop Nassar, agreed to pay $500 million to over than 300 women and young girls who were assaulted by Nassar. USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee also made a $380 million settlement.

In June 2022 Nassar had his final appeal rejected by the Michigan Supreme Court, as he argued he was ‘treated unfairly.’ However, he was sentenced to decades in prison for his horrific crimes.
