Breakdancing Will Make Debut As An Olympic Sport In 2024 Paris Games

Breakdancing is getting ready to make its debut as an Olympic sport as officials have announced its anticipated arrival to the 2024 Paris Games. On Monday (Dec. 7), the International Olympic Committee (IOC) added dance-offs to the list of games in an attempt to attract younger audiences to the athletic competition.

The idea was proposed by Paris Organizers nearly two years ago. Furthermore, the street-dancing competition will be referred to as breaking – just as it was originally coined in the 1970s by its Hip-Hop pioneers in the United States. It’s noted that the sport will debut with 16 athletes in each of the men’s and women’s medal events.

In addition to breakdancing, surfing, sport climbing and skateboarding will also make their own debuts at the Tokyo Games, which were postponed from 2020 to July 23, 2021 due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Additionally, the IOC has slated 329 medal events in Paris, which is 10 fewer than in Tokyo, and have given an athlete quota in 2024 of 10,500, about 600 less than next year.
