On Tuesday (April 16), a woman named Érika de Souza Vieira Nunes was seen on video pushing a wheelchair with a corpse in front of a teller at Itau Bank. The Brazilian woman claims the 68-year-old dead man was her “uncle” named Paulo Roberto Braga. In the video, the Brazilian woman attempts to get the dead man to sign a bank loan for 17,000 reais (or about $3,250).

In the video, the man appears pale in the face and his head drops several times in various unnatural angles whenever the Brazilian woman isn’t supporting him. Two female bank tellers also comment on the dead man’s appearance, noting the same descriptions.

In the video, the Brazilian woman is also seen trying to put a pen in the dead man’s hands and “force him” to sign the paperwork. The woman is heard saying, “Uncle Paulo, can you hear me? You need to sign it. If you don’t sign, there is no way. I cannot sign for you. This is a document. Here is your name, Paulo Roberto Braga. You must hold the pen.”

As mentioned, one of the bank tellers notices his appearance and says, “I don’t think he is OK. He is not well.” The woman repeatedly lifts his head upright, but it continues to fall backward. With his eyes closed shut and his arms limp, the Brazilian woman attempts to curl her dead “uncle’s” fingers around a pen, but it would not grip. She then assures the tellers, “He is normally like this.”

The Brazilian woman continues to try to have the dead man sign the document, which only causes the staff to become even more concerned. One of the tellers repeated, “No, he is not well. His color look…” The woman then says, “If you are not well, I will take you to the hospital. Do you want to go to the emergency room again?”

Eventually, the bank staff called the police, resulting in the Brazilian woman being arrested. She has since been charged with fraud and her dead “uncle” was taken to the morgue. Police have launched an investigation to determine if the man, whose identity has not been officially confirmed as Paulo Roberto Braga, died from natural causes or “another means that would warrant a homicide investigation.” They are also trying to establish the relationship between the Brazilian woman and her “dead” uncle.

An attorney for the woman claimed the man had died at the bank, but a forensic analysis determined that he had died earlier while lying down. Rio de Janeiro Civil police chief Fabio Luis Souza said that ambulance services determined that the man had been dead for at least two hours before the woman’s arrest.
