On January 16, lawyer Leandro Mathias de Novaes accompanied his mother to the Laboratorio Cura in Sao Paulo for an MRI. However, the hospital staff was unaware he had a firearm and requested that all metal items be removed before entering the MRI room. Nonetheless, Novaes refused to surrender his registered firearm. The magnetic field of the MRI machine pulled the weapon from his waistband, causing it to go off and hit him in the stomach.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital and died three weeks later, on February 6. According to a Laboratorio Cura spokesperson, all staff followed safety protocols. “both the patient and his companion were properly instructed regarding the procedures for accessing the examination room and warned about the removal of any and all metallic objects.” Novaes and his mother also signed a form confirming they were aware of the risks as reported by the New York Post.

A statement was also released by Novaes’ colleagues, who said his passing saddened them.

“It is with deep regret that OAB Cotia communicates to all fellow lawyers the unexpected loss of our dear friend and lawyer, Dr. Leandro Mathias de Novaes. We are sorry for the loss, and we sympathize with his family in this moment of pain.”

Social media reacted to the case and blamed the lawyer and hospital staff despite the known facts.

After the lawyer’s death went viral on social media, there was equal criticism concerning the lawyer’s careless decision and the hospital staff not being more aware of triple-check Novaes and his mother. One user wrote, “he was careless but so were the techs. I work in health care they’re supposed to go through about 3 different checks to make sure you have no metal on or in your body. Another wrote in response, I’m a nurse, they were not careless, they don’t have metal detectors, if they tell you to remove all metal objects you’re supposed to remove all metal objects. He didn’t now he’s dead.Others solely blamed Novaes for his decision for bringing the weapon inside.
