Brandy VERZUZ Monica: The Shade-Filled Battle That Broke The Internet

Although we never thought the day would come for a BrandyMonica reunion, we got it thanks to the good people at ‘VERZUZ.’ And while their battle broke the internet — as they kept a cool 1.2M viewers for most of the night — besides the nostalgic tunes, it was the shade-filled moments that kept the viewers engaged.

As many know, there’s been an unspoken reason as to why the duo’s fake beef from “The Boy Is Mine” turned real. For over 20 years since the song’s release, fans theorized what led to the queens’ fallout; with most harping on Monica’s infamous pimp slap to Brandy’s face backstage that led to the years-long feud; something producer Dallas Austin talked about in a 2019 interview. However, Mo addressed last night, stating, “Why would you say that? We had a disagreement. We know I’ll kick in a door when it comes to the opposite sex, so I kicked down a door.” Brandy then apologized profusely, admitting she was wrong for acknowledging the claim. She noted, “This will probably go viral” — which it did, but that wasn’t the only thing.

In addition to presidential candidate Kamala Harris making a cameo and the duo addressing their beef, the shade throughout the battle was clear as ever between the two and fans took to Twitter to point it out. Moments included: Brandy wanting read a poem, which users put a photo of Monica slouching in her chair, eyes rolled back; Brandy asking Monica if the song playing was new, which Monica replied “That’s old;” and we couldn’t leave out the moment when both queens went to introduce a song by saying, “I was 14 when I did this..I was 17 when I did that..” In addition to the shade between the two, there came a moment when Brandy didn’t know who Caresha aka Yung Miami was — which prompted a post and delete from the City Girls femcee who tweeted, “I only know 2 Brandy songs so we even.” Despite all of the tea-sipping, the battle was legendary and made the fans feel special and nostalgic — even if they were just acting, Brandy & Monica put on a show for all! #Socialites, which was your favorite shady moment?
