Eight people were killed, and at least seven others were injured before police killed 33-year-old Mauricio Garcia. President Joe Biden said Garcia used an AR-15 and wore tactical gear while committing the senseless act.

“An assailant in tactical gear armed with an AR-15 style assault weapon gunned down innocent people in a shopping mall, and not for the first time. Such an attack is too shocking to be so familiar. And yet, American communities have suffered roughly 200 mass shootings already this year, according to leading counts. More than 14,000 of our fellow citizens have lost their lives, credible estimates show. The leading cause of death for American kids is gun violence.”

What we know about the other victims of the mass shooting

When the shooting occurred, Daniela and Sofia Mendoza were at the outlet with their mother, Ilda Mendoza. Both sisters were killed, and Ilda remains in critical condition. In a report by CNN, Daniela and Sofia were elementary school students in the Wylie Independent School District.

“Words cannot express the sadness we feel as we grieve the loss of our students. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Mendoza family, the families of the victims, and all those affected by this senseless tragedy,” a letter from the district reads.

Christian LaCour,20, worked as a security guard at the outlets and was known to be well-liked by family and outlet employees who interacted with him. “Every time he was in the store, it felt safer. He brought laughter and joy and always knew what to say,” said employee Max Weiss.

Aishwarya Thatikonda worked as an engineer and moved to the United States five years ago to pursue her master’s degree at Eastern Michigan University. She graduated in 2020 with a Master of Science in construction management and visited the outlets with a friend when the shooting happened. Her family plans to send her body to India for funeral preparations.
