Jordélia Pereira Barbosa, a 35-year-old woman in Brazil, has been arrested after allegedly sending poisoned chocolate Easter eggs to her ex-boyfriend’s new partner, leaving the woman’s 7-year-old son dead and the woman and her 13-year-old daughter in critical condition.
According to The Daily Mail and local outlets Imperatriz Online and FDamiao Noticias, Barbosa was arrested on suspicion of poisoning Easter eggs and sending them to the new family of her ex-boyfriend in a “revenge” plot.
On April 16, the Brazilian woman allegedly bought the chocolates while in disguise. CCTV footage obtained by Imperatriz Online allegedly shows Barbosa in a black wig, covering her blonde hair, buying chocolate Easter eggs from a local supermarket. She then allegedly spiked the candy before having it delivered via motorbike courier to her ex’s new partner, Mirian Lira.

According to reports, this was the woman’s second attempt to harm Lira. She allegedly failed another premeditated plan. In that alleged incident, she tried to offer Lira candies in a chocolate-tasting session for employees at the supermarket where she worked. Once the chocolate Easter eggs were in Lira’s possession, she then shared the chocolate eggs with her two children, a 7-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl.
Reports allege Barbosa specifically targeted the 32-year-old mother-of-two. Barbosa also allegedly left a note with candy that read, “With love, to Mirian Lira. Happy Easter.” Lira’s 7-year-old son, Luis Silva, “immediately” got sick after consuming the chocolate. He died in Imperatriz City Hospital on Thursday, April 17.

Meanwhile, Lira and her 13-year-old daughter Evelyn Fernanda remain in critical condition in the hospital, according to The Standard. An autopsy on the 7-year-old is expected to confirm his cause of death as poisoning. Other tests are being conducted on the leftover chocolate.
On April 17, Barbosa was arrested by the Maranhão Civil Police. They caught her as she tried to flee on a bus headed to her hometown of Santa Inês. Prior to her arrest, police found tons of receipts. They were connected to the chocolate eggs, two wigs, scissors, cards, a saw knife, and suspected drugs indicating her involvement.
Police also spoke with her ex, who suggested she may be the suspect. Once in police custody, the woman in Brazil admitted to buying the chocolates, but not poisoning the chocolate Easter eggs.
