In a shocking incident that left many people stunned, an Indiana mother, Blossum Kirby, was recently sentenced to a year in prison for child neglect after being caught biking across the city with her crying two-month-old twins in a milk crate. The incident came to light when employees from a pizza shop noticed a woman with a boy and a girl riding around the city unrestrained in a plastic carrier attached to the front of the bike with a bungee cord.

The babies were wearing only diapers, sunburned, and had minor injuries. Upon investigation, Kirby was found guilty of child neglect and charged with two counts of felony child neglect. She was later sentenced to one year in prison for her actions. The incident has sparked outrage and debate about the safety of children and the responsibility of parents when it comes to their wellbeing. While some have criticized Kirby for her actions, others have shown empathy towards her, citing that she may have been going through a difficult time and may not have had access to other means of transportation.

However, regardless of the circumstances, it is essential to ensure that children are not put in harm’s way and that their safety is always a top priority. “She had told me that prior to me stopping her, she had one baby in the front and one baby in the back,” one eyewitness said to Fox 59. “She couldn’t control the bike that well, so she put both babies in the one milk crate in the front. [She said] that was her way of transporting the babies any time she left.”

“It was heartbreaking. What I can’t stop thinking about is I know I wasn’t the only one to see her there were so many people who drove past her and just kept driving for who knows how long.”

Child neglect is a serious issue in Indiana, with rates of abuse consistently higher than the national average. According to Indiana Child Abuse and Neglect Statistics, neglect accounted for 71% of all reported cases, with children aged three or younger being the most vulnerable.

Shockingly, Indiana ranks third in the nation for child fatality rates, with 4.96 deaths per 100,000 children, compared to the national average of 2.32 deaths per 100,000. One of the primary causes of child neglect in Indiana is poverty. Approximately a quarter of Indiana’s children live in poverty, with many families struggling to provide basic necessities such as food, clothing, and shelter. Additionally, drug and alcohol abuse play a significant role in 61% of foster care placement cases.

Despite these alarming statistics, there is hope for victims and their families. Indiana Child Advocacy Centers (CACs) provide support services to around 10,000 abused or maltreated children each year. These centers offer a safe space for children to receive medical care, counseling, and other necessary services. CACs also provide support to families affected by abuse and neglect.
