A Black Virginia history teacher has filed a lawsuit against a white tenth-grade male student for harassment after he consistently left a banana near his classroom doorway for months.

Joel Mungo, a history teacher at Menchville High School, says he’s had enough of the constant taunting and harassment after a white student left the banana near the doorway of his classroom on six occasions. At first, the 21-year veteran teacher thought it was a coincidence but realized he was the only educator being targeted when the banana was placed in the same spot for at least a month.
Mungo identified the student after reviewing surveillance footage with school administrators and gave him a chance to explain why he continued the act. ‘I gave the student a chance to come clean. I asked him, ”Hey did you do this?” He said ”No,” he played dumb, “No idea what you’re talking about.” So I said, “OK, go down to the assistant principal.” I’m the only Black teacher he has. He has six other teachers. No other teachers were involved,’ he explained to WAVY 10. The teen’s parents were contacted about the incident but they were more upset after their son was suspended for two days.

Due to the stress of the situation, Mungo took a day off from work to process.
‘I’m just fed up with the racism around, especially at our academic institutions. Coming from the HBCUs and other colleges, the bomb threats, the nooses, the bananas and now it’s streaming into public education,”
