Black Lives Matter Co-Founder Resigns Amid ‘Misused’ Donations Controversy
A co-founder of Black Lives Matter has decided to step down as the executive director of the movement’s foundation amid controversy over “misused donations.”
Patrisse Cullors, who has been at the helm of the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation for nearly six years, announced the big news on Thursday. Cullors said Friday would be her last day but also noted that her departure is not linked to what she branded “right-wing attacks” seeking to discredit her. She said: “I’ve created the infrastructure and the support, and the necessary bones and foundation, so that I can leave,” Cullors told the Associated Press. “It feels like the time is right.” The 37-year-old activist also said her resignation has been planned for over a year and she is leaving to focus on a book and TV deal.
Her resignation comes amid controversy over the group’s finances along with her own personal wealth. It was reported last month by several outlets that she had built up an expanding property portfolio, including a luxury home near Malibu and a ranch in Georgia. Cullors spoke out and made it clear that “those were right-wing attacks that tried to discredit my character, and I don’t operate off of what the right thinks about me.”
Some critics argued that more money should have gone to the families of black victims of police brutality.
As CBS News reports, Makan Themba and Monifa Bandele, two senior executives who will serve in the interim until BLMGNF finds a permanent team for the roles. “Their immense talent will build a future where Black lives do more than matter — they will truly thrive,” Cullors added.
