‘Black Cake’ creator Marissa Jo Cerar On Bringing The Novel To Life & Powerful Storytelling

“Black Cake” is the lastest hit series to hit hulu based on Charmaine Wilkerson’s novel, exploring the themes of family, heritage, and the power of female friendship. The original series bring the novel to life perfectly and explores the dynamics of interpersonal relationships and secrets that shape the lives of the characters. The combination of suspense and history set against a Caribbean backdrop adds depth to the narrative. Creator Marissa Jo Cerar’s exploration of these themes and the adaptation of the novel into a series makes a compelling and thought-provoking viewing experience that we just cannot stop taking about, with hopes of a second series to follow on.

The story follows Eleanor Bennett who loses her battle with cancer, leaving her children a flash drive that holds untold stories of her journey from the Caribbean to America; the stories shock her children and challenge everything they know about their family’s origin.

Having the pleasure of binging the first 7 episodes before the public, we could not help be addicted as the storyline provokes thought and really has you connect to each character and what they are going through. If you have been tuning in every Wednesday then you know Eleanor/Covey’s story is a dynamic one filled with twists and turns, and one that truly reflects on some of the horrific events women and women of color in particular have endured over time. The series is both a great watch, but also a teachable one.

We spoke to creator Marissa Jo Cerar on how her talents landed her the series and how she was able to meticulously bring the vision to life to make a one of a kind viewing experience, and what the series taught her, as well as dealing with sensitive topics and conveying them the right way on screen.
