Juan Carlos Escotet Alviarez,31, and his fiancee Andrea Montero went to a fishing competition last Saturday near the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo when Montero went overboard as the boat was moving backward. According to TOO FAB, the captain was moving the stern to assist someone who was struggling with a fishing rod when he stumbled and bumped into Montero, causing her to fall off the boat.

Alviarez jumped in to save her but he was fatally struck by the propellers and Montero was pulled to safety after crew members assisted her with a life ring. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Officers Jason Rafter said Montero couldn’t remember the accident since she reportedly hit her head during the fall. “Rough as it was, she couldn’t say whether it was when she went over or coming back in,” he said in a statement.

Due to weather conditions in South Florida, Rafter stated the rescue was difficult as high winds and seas interfered.

Alviarez was the son of billionaire banker Escotet Sr., a banker who founded Venezuela’s Banesco, and he also worked as a director of the financial institution. The couple was also set to get married in November.
