In a statement obtained by the Associated Press, Withers’ family said the three-time Grammy Award winner died Monday in Los Angeles from heart complications. He was 81-years-old.
“We are devastated by the loss of our beloved, devoted husband and father. A solitary man with a heart-driven to connect to the world at large, with his poetry and music, he spoke honestly to people and connected them to each other. As private a life as he lived close to intimate family and friends, his music forever belongs to the world. In this difficult time, we pray his music offers comfort and entertainment as fans hold tight to loved ones.”
Withers passing comes as the public has drawn inspiration from his music during the coronavirus pandemic, with health care workers, artists, choirs and more posting their own renditions of “Lean on Me” to help get through the difficult times. The sweet song was even performed at the presidential inaugurations of both Barack Obama and Bill Clinton.
Withers is survived by his wife Marcia Johnson and their two children, Todd and Kori. He will be missed.
