The affair was brought up during a meeting in 2019 when a Microsoft engineer wrote in a letter that she had a sexual affair with Gates for several years. In exchange for exposing the relationship, the anonymous employee said she wanted Melinda Gates to read the letter and requested some changes for her position at the company. Board members were reportedly concerned after learning about the alleged affair and wanted Gates to step down as director of the board.

A spokesperson from the company confirmed that they received the letter and the woman claimed the relationship started in the year 2000. “Microsoft received a concern in the latter half of 2019 that Bill Gates sought to initiate an intimate relationship with a company employee in the year 2000. A committee of the Board reviewed the concern, aided by an outside law firm to conduct a thorough investigation. Throughout the investigation, Microsoft provided extensive support to the employee who raised the concern,” the statement said.

His rep did confirm a 20-year affair but it did end on friendlier terms and denied that he was asked to step down due to the letter’s content. She added that he wanted to step down to focus more on his philanthropic efforts.
