Biden Administration Restores Health Protections For Transgender People, Ending Trump-Era Policy

On Monday, the Biden administration announced that the United States will provide protections for gay and transgender Americans against sex discrimination in health care, reversing a Trump-era policy that had a goal to narrow the scope of legal rights in sensitive situations involving medical care.

In a Monday statement, Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra David said that LGBTQ people should have the same access to health care as everyone else: “Fear of discrimination can lead individuals to forgo care, which can have serious negative health consequences,” Xavier Becerra explained. “Everyone — including LGBTQ people — should be able to access health care, free from discrimination or interference, period.”

This big move comes after ex-President Trump’s administration ruled to remove ObamaCare’s nondiscrimination protections which prevented health care workers from denying care to patients based on their gender identity or sexual orientation, The Hill notes.

This Biden’s admistraitiob’s new policy change is the latest efforts to break from policies of the previous administration. This also follows a few like when he immediately lifted a travel ban to several Muslim-majority countries, stopped an effort to withdraw from the World Health Organization, rejoined the Paris Climate Accord, and rolled back several Trump-era environmental efforts, the Denver Channel reports.
