A memo was sent to the White House on July 13 from several diplomats who said Kabul was on the verge of collapsing under the Taliban. Prior to receiving the memo, President Biden said on July 8 that it was “highly unlikely” for the Taliban to take control over the capital city.

The confidential document also urged the White House to start evacuating Americans before August 1st as Afghan security forces were weakening among the Taliban’s resurgence. According to the Daily Mail, President Biden said during an interview Thursday morning that he didn’t recall receiving a memo regarding the militant group.

‘The timeframe of a potential collapse was widely estimated and ranged from weeks to months and even years following our departure. There was nothing that I or anyone else saw it indicated a collapse of this army in this government in 11 days.’

As previously reported, the Biden Administration was apparently surprised by the quick Taliban takeover in Afghanistan as President Biden planned for the swift transition of removing American troops from the country.

“The truth is: This did unfold more quickly than we had anticipated.”
