A close source said that Beyoncé, known for her strict clearance guidelines around her music, quickly granted permission to Harris’ campaign on Monday, just hours before Harris’ entrance. The singer has not officially endorsed Harris since President Joe Biden announced he would not seek a second term, allowing the use of “Freedom” to signal her support for Harris, CNN reported.

Beyoncé’s mother, Tina Knowles, expressed her support for Harris on Sunday, shortly after Biden’s announcement. She posted on her Instagram a photo of herself alongside Harris, noting her leadership qualities and supporting the presidential bid.

Beyonce has an extensive history of supporting Democratic nominees. In 2013, she performed the National Anthem at Barack Obama’s Inauguration. In 2016, she and her husband Jay-Z headlined a pre-election concert for Hilary Clinton in Cleveland, Ohio, with her backup dancers wearing blue pantsuits to honor Clinton.

In 2020, Beyoncé endorsed the Biden-Harris ticket, using her Instagram platform to encourage her followers to vote. “Freedom,” featuring Kendrick Lamar, debuted on Beyoncé’s 2016 album “Lemonade.” The Grammy-nominated song became an anthem during the demonstrations following George Floyd’s death in 2020.
