Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny is opening up about how he is still bothered by criticism after going viral for throwing, what many have referred to as, an intrusive fan’s phone. Speaking on the incident, months later, the global Latin star fires back, “Bro, that cellphone didn’t even break.”

While speaking with Rolling Stone about conquering the world and becoming a megastar, Bad Bunny also talked about the negatives that have come along with all the success he’s had in recent years. He talks about all the tabloid attention and internet outrage, especially after going viral and being called out for throwing a fan’s phone, who seemingly just wanted to capture a moment with the mega-celeb.
Along his fast rise to stardom, Bad Bunny, born 29 years ago in Almirante Sur, Puerto Rico as Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, caught major heat back in January 2023 when he was on vacation in the Dominican Republic.
The rapero/cantante was walking down a street with some of his friends when fans start to bum rush them to grab pictures and videos with Bad Bunny. Recalling the incident for his cover piece with Rolling Stone, the Latin star said, “People were recording. I love going to D.R., so I was waving to everyone, like, ‘Que lo que!’”
That’s when one eager woman jumped in front of him for a selfie. Bad Bunny said, “That person got right on me, leaned directly on my body.” And because everything happened so fast and he felt imposed on, his immediate reaction was to grab the phone and toss it, to hopefully get the woman to shoo along with it. Bad Bunny noted that he didn’t really feel anyway in the moment, but “the next day,” he did feel bad.

Despite explaining how strong he felt about having his personal space invaded, he pointed out that he never tossed the fan’s phone into the ocean, which they were very close to. He added, “Bro, that cellphone didn’t break. It exists. It bothers me that people haven’t said that. I didn’t throw that phone into the water. I threw it into some bushes.”
He went on to claim that the woman went and picked the phone right back up where it landed. He laughed and added, “She has it. She should upload the video.”
When he saw the criticism online about what he’d done to an eager, but debatably intrusive, fan, Bad Bunny shut down his social media accounts and retreated into a mansion that he reportedly purchased for $8.8 million in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles, California.

Prior to his recent comments about the incident, Bad Bunny initially addressed the viral footage on Twitter. Translated from Spanish to English, he said, “Anyone who comes up to me to say hello, to tell me something, or just to meet me, will always receive my attention and respect. Those who come and put a f**king phone in my face, I will take it for what it is, a lack of respect and I will react accordingly.”
