Ava DuVernay Elected To The Academy Board of Governors For The First Time, Whoopi Goldberg Returns For Third Term

While Whoopi Goldberg returns for her third term, Ava DuVernay has been elected to the Academy Board of Governors for the first time. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that DuVernay and Goldberg are among six candidates elected to the their directors and actors branches for the first term of the year.

As DuVernay celebrates a new victory and milestone, this is Goldberg’s third term, re-elected by her fellow thespians. Additionally, the organization has established new records for women, in electing 26 from 25, and people of color, in electing 12 from 11, who now make up its 54-person board.

Furthermore, it’s noted that DuVernay joins the branch after her 2014 film ‘Selma‘ was denied best director and best actor Oscar nominations — which in turn played a role in the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, resulting in a significant changes at the Academy, including this latest accomplishment for DuVernay.
