Atlanta Police Arrest 44 People & Impound 29 Cars After Illegal Street Racing Bust
Over the weekend, Atlanta police arrested 44 people, impounded 29 cars, gave out 114 citations, and recovered four guns, including a semi-automatic rifle, after making a massive bust on illegal street racing, that spread from the interstates to the streets of downtown Atlanta.
Atlanta PD Chief Erika Shields said officers are still targeting others who continue the “senseless behavior.” She stated on Monday (May 18), “We pledged to deal with these speeders and reckless drivers who have shown a complete disregard for the safety of others with these dangerous antics. This weekend, with the help of our law enforcement partners, we made inroads. We will continue to impound, arrest and seek costly fines for those individuals who choose Atlanta for this senseless behavior.”

Of the 44 arrests and 144 citations, with ages ranging from 17 to 43, police accused the suspects of: reckless driving, laying drag, speeding, drinking in public, possession of marijuana, driving under the influence, suspended license, and more. One convicted felon was also found to be in and charged with possession of a firearm.
Additionally, the huge crackdown arrives weeks after viral videos posted to social media showed massive crowds spectating and ignoring social distancing protocol as the stunt-driving events carried on with fireworks and the whole shebang.
