As $600 Unemployment Benefit Ends, Republicans Propose To Reenact At $200
As the $600 unemployment benefit is set to end this month, Republicans have proposed to reenact the plan with a $400 reduction, leaving recipients with $200 a week.
The benefits were a part of the federal unemployment plan from the CARES Act, initiated in response to the global coronavirus pandemic earlier this year. As final payments were either sent out on July 25 or 26, depending on the state, GOP officials are looking to continue the plan, but with a reduction in weekly funds.

Their proposal would be to help alleviate excess federal funding and still allow already overwhelmed states to continue working on rolling out a new wage replacement plan backed by the federal government. The plan has the government guaranteeing that unemployed workers will receive 70% of their previous income in temporary unemployment benefits. At the moment, states currently provide about 45%.
Furthermore, the GOP is set to present the proposal today for lawmakers to review and decide upon.
