Arrests Made After French Bus Driver Is Beaten To Death For Asking Passengers To Wear Face Masks

Arrests have been made in relation to the killing of Philippe Monguillot, a 59-year-old French bus driver who was beaten to death after asking passengers to wear face masks.

Last Friday, Monguillot died in a southwest France hospital after being left brain dead following an assault in Bayonne on July 5. His family, decided to take him off of life support, with his 18-year-old daughter, Marie Monguillot stating, “We decided to let him go. The doctors were in favor, and we were as well.”

The attack occurred after Monguillot asked three unmasked passengers to put a face covering on. While trying to check another passenger’s ticket, the suspects then forced him off the bus and “violently kicked and punched the upper part of his body, including his head.” Police have since arrested five men, two for attempted murder, two for failing to help a person in danger, and one for hiding a suspect.

Following news of the incident, France’s Prime Minster, Jean Castex, described the attack as “cowardly,” noting that the case has “touched our hearts.” He added, “The Republic recognizes him as an exemplary citizen and won’t forget him. The law will punish the perpetrators of this despicable crime.”
