According to NBC News, Sheriff Todd Wright resigned during a public meeting about the incident at the Quorum Court. Wright faced backlash after the five-minute recording was uploaded on Facebook. In the recording, Wright appears to be upset with a woman who accompanied him after she spoke to a Black person at the store. He uses various racial slurs to describe Black people approximately nine times.
Before announcing his resignation, Wright apologized for offending anyone with his remarks and said he made the comments “at the heat of the moment” because he was upset over certain actions. He also claimed he’s not racist.

A woman of the man who Wright called various racial slurs, said she didn’t appreciate him calling her son the N-word and should keep his issues outside of the workplace.
“If you got problems, don’t bring them to work.”
After the meeting, County Judge Thomas Best said members of the court asked for Wright’s resignation amid the recording’s viral post on Facebook. Also, a motion was passed to allow him to continue as a paid contractor until Sept.30 but he will not be an active officer.
The county’s chief deputy will temporarily serve as sheriff until a replacement is found.
