In recent years, the entertainment industry has faced increasing scrutiny for its treatment of child actors. With the release of the documentary series, “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV,” it helped shed light on the troubling allegations surrounding Nickelodeon and its former producer, Dan Schneider.

As previously reported, the five-part series, directed by Mary Robertson and Emma Schwartz went into detail about what some stars experienced. Drake Bell — who starred in “Drake and Josh” as well as “All That” — also revealed that he was sexually abused by an acting coach who was employed by the network. While many former stars continued to speak out after the March release, other continue to share their reaction to it all.

Former Nickelodeon star Ariana Grande has recently broken her silence on the matter, speaking out in support of the alleged victims and advocating for a safer environment for children in the industry. During an interview on Penn Badgley’s podcast, Podcrushed, Grande explained, “A lot of people don’t have the support that they need to get through performing at that level at such a young age, but also dealing with some of the things that the survivors who have come forward…there’s not a word for how devastating that is to hear,” the Grammy winner said. Grande, who starred in the popular series Victorious and its spinoff Sam & Cat, both created by Dan Schneider, continued,

“I think that the environment needs to be made safer if kids are going to be acting, and I think there should be therapists, I think there should be parents allowed to be wherever they want to be,” she continued, adding that parents should be allowed everywhere, not just “only on kids sets.”

She continued, “I think if anyone wants to do this or music or anything at any level of exposure that it means to be on TV or to do music with a major label or whatever, [it] should be in the contract,” Grande said.

As one of the most influential figures in the music industry, Ariana Grande’s voice carries significant weight. Grande’s support for the alleged victims and her call for a safer environment will undoubtedly encourage others to join the conversation and work towards implementing necessary reforms.

What Has Nickelodeon Said About The Allegations?

Nickelodeon has previously reacted to Drake Bell’s revelation in a statement shared with Deadline. “Now that Drake Bell has disclosed his identity as the plaintiff in the 2004 case, we are dismayed and saddened to learn of the trauma he has endured, and we commend and support the strength required to come forward.”

Following a Nickelodeon investigation, which did not find evidence of sexual misconduct at the time, did however, find proof of abusive behavior. As a result Dan Schneider was dropped by the network in 2018.

“Watching over the past few nights was very difficult,” Schneider said in a reaction video on his YouTube channel.“Me facing my past behaviors, some of which are embarrassing and that I regret … and I definitely owe some people a pretty strong apology.”
