The superstar explained to the outlet that while growing up, she was inspired by Country icons like Dolly Pardon and Kenny Rogers. She’s now excited about taking the big jump to another genre: “I grew up loving country music and my stepfather, who raised me, is a Methodist minister, but he also drove buses and he would take us to Nashville, Gatlinburg, and Dollywood in Tennessee,” she shared.
“I became a really big fan of Dolly Parton, at about eight or nine years old. That was my real introduction to country music,” she continued. “Shortly after, it was Kenny Rogers. I started listening to the depth of the songs and the fact that they were unafraid to say whatever it was they felt. I felt like this was a great time for me to really step into an area that I’ve always admired and loved. We’re just getting started but I have so enjoyed it and been welcomed with open arms, ” Billboard quotes.
Monica isn’t the only R&B singer who’s taking on country music. Fellow singer K. Michelle is planning to release a country project soon. However, last year, the Love and Hip-Hop reality star explained why it’s been taking her so long to complete it. While speaking with ESSENCE’s Cori Murray and Charli Penn on a recent episode of the Yes, Girl! podcast, K. Michelle explained that she’s on a mission to “change the color of country music,” and she wants her work to be perfect.
