Acting Chief Robert J. Contee III made the announcement on Wednesday during a meeting with the House of Appropriations Committee. Contee was the second officer who responded to the insurrection on Jan. 6 and committed suicide in the wake of its aftermath.
Contee said during the meeting, “We honor the service and sacrifices of Officers Brian Sicknick, Howard Liebengood, and Jeffery Smith, and offer condolences to all the grieving families. The costs for this insurrection — both human and monetary — will be steep,”

Sicknick was killed during the insurrection after rioters tried to break into the building. He was hit in the head with a fire extinguisher and later died from his injuries. So far, over 150 people have been arrested for attempting to overthrow the 2020 election and destroying federal property. However, no one has been charged for Sicknick’s death.
