Amid tons of criticism and days after President Donald Trump pulled her Secret Service detail, the LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department) has stopped providing protection for former Vice President Kamala Harris.
Donald Trump Cuts Secret Service Detail For Former Vice President Kamala Harris As She Launches 107-City Book Tour
As we previously shared, on August 28, Trump officially cut off Harris’ Secret Service protection with a full stop by September 1. The move ended a layer of security former President Joe Biden quietly extended before leaving the White House in January.
Usually, federal law grants former presidents to received Secret Service protection for life and former vice presidents six months of Secret Service detail after leaving office. So, Harris’ coverage would have ended on July 21, but, Biden secretly signed a memorandum giving her another year of protection.
However, in a letter obtained by CNN, Trump signed an order directing Homeland Security to shut down all extra security measures beyond what the law requires. The letter read:
“Memorandum for the Secretary of Homeland Security. You are hereby authorized to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris.”
At the time, the move arrived at a critical time as Harris prepared to launch her multi-city tour fo ‘107 Days,’ her memoir reflecting on her brief presidential campaign. The book is set to release on September 23, meaning she is still very much in the public eye more than she has since leaving office.
Reacting to the move, Harris’ Senior Adviser Kirsten Allen told CNN, “The Vice President is grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety.”
LAPD Ends Protection For Former Vice President Kamala Harris Days After Trump Ends Secret Service Detail And Amid Much Criticism
In the aftermath of President Donald Trump cutting off Secret Service detail for former Vice President Kamala Harris, a specialized unit within the Los Angeles Police Department began providing protection. However, after much criticism, that unit has decided to end its protection, according to The New York Times.
The LAPD’s Metropolitan Division — which falls under the police department’s special operations group — previously assigned officers to protect Harris. However, The Times reports that on Saturday morning (September 6), the officers were removed from her detail after an elite unit and police union criticized the service.
The Times reports that the LAPD said this week it assigned officers to assist the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in providing protection for Harris. However, after backlash from the LAPD’s union, The Los Angeles Police Protective League, the LAPD’s help will cease, leaving CHP to solely provide protection. The union called the arrangement “nuts,” arguing that “LA taxpayers should not be footing the bill for this ridiculousness.”
On Monday (September 8), the union’s board of directors told Fox News Digital, “We are happy to report that the Metro officers assigned to protect the multimillionaire failed presidential candidate are back on the street fighting crime.”
Elsewhere, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass told The New York Times that the arrangement was never a permanent solution. She explained, “The plan was always to provide temporary support, and I thank L.A.P.D. for protecting former V.P. Harris and always prioritizing the safety of all Angelenos.”
