Amber Heard Speaks Out — Says She Doesn’t ‘blame’ jury for siding with Johnny Depp: I ‘Understand’ Jury, But Social Media Wasn’t ‘Fair’

In her first sit-down interview since taking her L in the big legal battle with ex-husband Johnny Depp, Amber Heard is speaking out about the whole ordeal.

Heard sat down with Savannah Guthrie for an interview set to air Tuesday and Wednesday on NBC’s “Today.” In the interview, she tells Guthrie that she understands why the Virginia jury reached their verdict in favor of Depp. She says, “I don’t blame them. I actually understand. He’s a beloved character and people feel they know him. He’s a fantastic actor.” The actress added,

“I don’t care what one thinks about me or what judgments you want to make about what happened in the privacy of my own home, in my marriage, behind closed doors. I don’t presume the average person should know those things. And so I don’t take it personally,” Heard said. “But even somebody who is sure I’m deserving of all this hate and vitriol, even if you think that I’m lying, you still couldn’t look me in the eye and tell me that you think on social media there’s been a fair representation. You cannot tell me that you think that this has been fair.”

Recap Of Johnny Depp Defamation Case

As we previously reported, earlier this month, the seven-person jury reached a verdict, deciding that Depp, 59, proved Heard defamed him in her 2018 op-ed about coming forward with sexual-violence allegations. As a result, the jury awarded Depp $15 million in damages but Heard will only have to pay $10.35 million due to a Virginia law limiting punitive damages (the judge reduced the amount). Heard however, won one of the three defamation counts, and was awarded $2 million in damages.

Her lawyer has said that she can “absolutely not” pay the large sum of money to Johnny. However, it has also been said that it’s possible Johnny Depp may not pursue money awarded by Amber Heard trial verdict.

His lawyers, Camille Vasquez and Benjamin Chew, sat down for an interview on Good Morning America, exactly one week after winning their client’s defamation case. Benjamin expressed that the court case was never about winning millions if the jury were to side with him in the trial. “We obviously can’t disclose attorney-client communications, but as Mr. Depp testified, this was never about money for Mr. Depp,” he said. “This was about restoring his reputation — and he’s done that.”

Benjamin added, “We feel very confident that there are no errors that would justify any kind of successful appeal.”

“The key to victory was focusing on the facts and the evidence, and Johnny’s opportunity to speak the truth for the first time,” Camille continued, reminding Savannah and viewers at home that it had been “six years in the making. We believe that evidence speaks for itself. … The jury made a unanimous decision based on those facts.”
