The candy was first introduced in 2001 but was discontinued in 2010 due to low sales. According to the New York Post, thanks to the efforts of fans, it will be re-released, but it will only be sold at Cracker Barrel’s Old Country Store under a different name, Retro Sours.

Altoid will no longer produce Retro Sours. Instead, the candy will be made by Iconic Candy, a family-run business committed to preserving the original recipe. Fans can anticipate the return of classic flavors such as mango, tangerine, and citrus, allowing them to reminisce about their childhood memories.

However, a release date has yet to be announced. Still, the candy is expected to be available later this month at Cracker Barrel stores nationwide as fans can purchase their favorite flavors.

Fans reacted differently after the announcement on Snackolator’s Instagram post. One user wrote, “Not the same. We want the OG packaging as well” in reference to the new Retro Sours packaging. Another said, “I’m so excited! Iconic Candy is truly trying to bring back all the classics. Now if they can do fruit stripe gum that amps up the 10 seconds of flavor.”

“The roof of my mouth hurts looking at them,” a fan reminisced regarding the candy’s sour flavor.

Originally created in England as a medicinal peppermint lozenge, they were known as “Jacob’s Aromatic Peppermint Lozenges.” The name “Altoids” was adopted in the late 19th century. These lozenges were initially marketed as a remedy for various ailments, including indigestion and headaches. Altoids gained popularity as a breath freshener and a stylish accessory. Their iconic tin packaging, which was designed to be easily carried in a pocket or purse, became a recognizable symbol of the brand.

Iconic Candy said in a follow up statement that they are releasing Retro Sours nationwide and they are “not connected with the manufacturer of the original product nor Altoids or Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company,” in reference to a previous statement regarding the candy’s recipe.
