The twins not only came into the world together, worked and lived life together, but also left this world with each other. According to German newspaper BILD, on Monday (November 17), the twins chose to end their lives at 89. They did so at their home in Grünwald, near Munich, through a medical aid in dying. It’s called assisted suicide.

According to Dignity in Dying, this process of medical aid has been legal in Germany since 2019. However, it’s noted that the process is different than euthanasia, which is illegal. In the latter process, patients themselves administer prescribed drugs to end their lives, instead of a doctor.

The renowned German entertainers, who reached international stardom for their post-war entertainment in the 1950s and 1960s, reportedly “no longer wanted to live.” So, “they had chosen to end their lives together.” Reportedly, police were notified after the process was completed.

Ahead of their deaths, the Kessler twins said they wanted their ashes buried in the same urn when they pass. Per their request, they will reportedly be buried alongside their mother Elsa Kessler, 69, and their dog, Yello, 14. In April 2024, they told BILD, “This is how we have also ordered it in our will.”

The sisters were born on August 20, 1936 in Nerchaud (Saxony). They worked as internationally-recognized singers, dancers, actresses, and overall entertainers.

In an Instagram post shared on Monday, Radio Monte Carlo shared a tribute. Translated from Italian to English, it read:

“Alice and Ellen Kessler left together, just as they lived: inseparable. Born in 1936, they were an absolute symbol of European spectacle, including music, dance and television. In Italy, they became celebrities as the ‘legs of the nation,’ icon of elegance and stage presence since the Fifties. A unique artistic couple, capable of leaving an indelible imprint on the collective imagination.”
