The football world has been rocked by the heartbreaking news of the untimely passing of former University of Albany defensive lineman, Amitral “AJ” Simon.
The devastating news hit just a week before the highly anticipated 2024 NFL Draft, for which Simon had declared his entry back in December 2023. He was just 25 years old.
The University of Albany football program took to their official social media platform to share the sad news on Wednesday, April 17. In a heartfelt statement, they said, “The UAlbany football program was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former student-athlete Amitral “AJ” Simon this morning. AJ was a tremendous young man and even better teammate throughout his time at UAlbany. He was a role model both on and off the field, serving as a pillar to this program over the last two years. He will be profoundly missed.”

Simon’s journey to success began at Bloomsburg University before he found his place at the University of Albany. He had a great track record on the field, including being named a 2023 All-CAA first-team defensive selection and receiving multiple prestigious accolades, showcased his undeniable talent and dedication to the sport.
Beyond his athletic accomplishments, Simon was also recognized for his academic excellence, being honored as part of the 2023 Fall CAA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll.
This news comes just two weeks after it was announced that former NFL cornerback Vontae Davis died at the age of 35.
As we previously reported, ESPN said that the Davie Police Department in Broward County, Fla. received a medical call in the morning after the house assistant at Vontae Davis’ home found the former football player lifeless. ESPN added that the police department did not suspect foul play in Vontae Davis’ death.
AJ Simon and Vontae Davis’ Will be greatly missed.
