The incident took place early Saturday afternoon while the 15-year-old girl went swimming in the ocean and her family told investigators that they were visiting from Alabama. The city’s weather for that day was thunderstorms that lasted from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. but it was unconfirmed if lifeguards warned visitors to exit out of the water. After she was struck, emergency medics performed CPR and transported her to a nearby hospital where she later died from her injuries. Her identity was not released to the public.

Upon receiving news of her passing, a statement was released by the Tybee Island Police. “The men and women of the City of Tybee Island are deeply saddened by the loss of this young woman and our hearts remain with her family and friends,” it reads.
