The social media platform’s new policy has included a new feature where it prevents adults from making contact with minors by blocking direct messages if the teen or child is not following them. Instagram is also working on new artificial intelligence and other technology to confirm the real ages of their youngest users. Along with the block direct message from adults, Instagram will send an alert to underage users to use caution when speaking with a possibly suspicious adult along with the option to report, restrict, or block the user.

Instagram confirmed the news in a blog post on Tuesday and said they were aware that their younger users were lying about their date of birth. ‘While many people are honest about their age, we know that young people can lie about their date of birth. We want to do more to stop this from happening, but verifying people’s age online is complex and something many in our industry are grappling with. To address this challenge, we’re developing new artificial intelligence and machine learning technology to help us keep teens safer and apply new age-appropriate features’, it reads.
