Adrienne Bailon Houghton continues to be an open book when it comes to her years-long fertility struggles, now revealing that she “easily spent over a million dollars” on IVF treatments (in-vitro fertilization) before welcoming her son via surrogate.
Over the weekend, the 40-year-old singer-actress-TV host spoke with PEOPLE during her pop-up tour for her LA VOÛTE brand on Saturday (April 20). During the conversation, Bailon Houghton spoke about her and her husband Israel Houghton‘s journey to conceive. Bailon said they exhausted all of their resources before deciding to have their 20-month-old son, Ever James Houghton, via surrogate.
Adrienne Bailon Houghton said, “I only did eight cycles of IVF, but that doesn’t include the amount of IUIs I did and every other kind of imaginable treatments that you could imagine for fertility. So it was a pretty tough six years of trying to have my son.”
When the former ‘The Real‘ host was asked about how much she approximately spent on her fertility treatments, Bailon Houghton said she believes she spent “easily over a million dollars.” She added, “And that is not realistic for the average person. And I recognize that.”
As mentioned, Adrienne Bailon Houghton has been open about her struggles with infertility for a while. In 2018, she shared a candid conversation with her former co-hosts of ‘The Real,’ revealing that getting pregnant with her husband wasn’t as easy as she hoped it would be.
At the time, the host said, “I think so many people are very insensitive to that, in the sense [that] I know you guys are like, ‘Is she pregnant?’ ‘Her face is fuller’— FYI I’ve always had a really chubby face so that’s not what it is. I think that as an audience we should be sensitive to the fact that everybody doesn’t get pregnant right away. I think for myself I thought it would happen so easily for me and it just hasn’t happened that way.”
She continued, “I’ve had to come to peace with that it’ll happen when it’s God’s timing and I believe in that and I have faith in all of that But it can be really discouraging and it can be really frustrating.”
In August 2022, when Adrienne Bailon Houghton announced that she and her husband had welcomed her son via surrogate, she reflected on her trying journey to motherhood. She said, “Our baby boy is here & we are so in love! If you have followed our love story… you know that our journey to baby has been very challenging – But God is true to His word and His promises. We have quietly prayed while sitting on this most magnificent secret for the last 9 months.”
She continued, “He is worth every tear, every disappointment, every delayed prayer, every IVF cycle, every miscarriage. Everything. All we feel is joy and overwhelming love & gratitude. Grateful to God, to our angel surrogate and to all of our friends and family who have stood with us for over 5 years on this journey. He’s here and we have never been happier to lose sleep! #HappilyEverHoughton 🤍.”
