Adam Mosseri, Head Of Instagram, Condemns Russia As They Plan To Ban IG On Monday, Cutting Off 80M Users
Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, condemns Russia as it was announced earlier today that they plan to ban Instagram and YouTube come Monday (Mar. 14) — cutting off at least 80M users from using the platform to connect with users worldwide. The new ban comes a week after Russia blocked Facebook, and after reports of “Meta allowing Ukrainians to post violent threats against Russian military.”
Taking to his personal IG, Mosseri released a video and captioned it, “On Monday, Instagram will be blocked in Russia. This decision will cut 80 million in Russia off from one another, and from the rest of the world as ~80% of people in Russia follow an Instagram account outside their country. This is wrong.”
In the video, he broke down the ban Russia has planned and condemned their actions, stating, “the situation is terrifying.” He added, “We’re trying to do all that we can to help keep people safe. We’ve made encrypted chats available to everyone in Ukraine and Russia, and we’ve encouraged everyone in the region to make their accounts private, and we’ve made it so that you cannot see who another accounts follows, for safety reasons.” He also says, “We’ve also pledged $15 million to humanitarian efforts, and we’ve seen 750,000 people on the platform raise over $30 million for similar efforts.” #Socialites, thoughts?
