Comedian and ‘Abbott Elementary‘ star Janelle James is currently under fire and facing mountains of backlash over a resurfaced “sick” and “disgusting” joke about her son’s genitalia.
James is the latest comic to be criticized and face cancelation over a joke some are now finding too inappropriate or distasteful for today’s sensitive climate in the entertainment industry.
The comedian is currently best known for playing “Principal Ava Coleman” on ABC’s ‘Abbott Elementary,’ created by Quinta Brunson. However, James is now being first associated with this resurfaced clip — which began going viral on social media this week and prompted immediate outrage from cancel culture critics.
The clip, which shows James telling a “sick” joke about playing with her son’s private parts, was taken from a Netflix standup special called, ‘The Standups.’ The comment was made during the third season of the special, which was released in December 2021.
In the 2-year-old clip going viral, Janelle James said, “My youngest son got a d**k now. I didn’t know that. I didn’t know he had a d**k. They say you blink and you miss it. It’s true. I didn’t know he had a d**k. I was sitting on the edge of my bed and he ran by from the bathroom… I guess he forgot his towel or whatever, and I was like, ‘What the f**k was that?'”
As she continued to tell the “sick” joke about her son’s genitalia, James said, “Like, it blew my mind. I said, ‘That’s a d**k. What?’ That d**k needs to get a job. Okay? Can’t be walking around with all that d**k and no income. That’s disrespectful.”
James continued to recall changing her son’s diapers as a baby and while doing so, playing “rhythm guitar” with his genitals. She explained, “He used to have a ‘pee-pee.’ You know? The last time I saw that was a ‘pee-pee.’ You change the diaper, you play rhythm guitar on the pee-pee. Ding-ding-a-ding-ding-a-ding-ding-a-ding. No other parents in here? That’s the best part of having a baby boy.”
The resurfaced standup clip was reportedly first shared by the X (formerly Twitter) account @jadedspicee, along with the caption, “I’ve never been so uncomfortable watching standup before like she’s a weirdo.”
Janelle James quickly became a target under attack from all angles after the clip about her son’s genitalia went viral. Most of the backlash finds fans calling her out for being wildly inappropriate during her special. One social user said, “Now if a man had sat up and talked about his daughter’s private area like that, people would understand!!!”
Another X user said, “Woke up to Janelle James making jokes about her son’s genitals,” and a third added, “It’s terrible. I couldn’t even get through the whole clip it’s that bad.”
Others, however, defended James. One user wrote, “‘Abbott Elementary”s S3 trailer dropped and now Janelle James is being dragged for a joke 2 yrs ago, but NOTHING else in the special. Keith Lee went to New York and haters said ‘GO AWAY!’ Tory Lanez SHOT Meg Thee Stallion! *Victim blaming* Y’all don’t know ya head from ya a**.”
