‘Abbott Elementary’ Creator Quinta Brunson Hit With Copyright Infringement Lawsuit

On Monday morning (Jul. 18), reports stated a woman, Christine Davis, filed a suit against Brunson and ABC claiming their hit 2021 comedy is a “knock-off” of her 2020 copyrighted show ‘This School Year.”

In court documents, Davis claimed that she wrote her script in 2018 and that her show was registered with the copyright office in early 2020, which is a year before Brunson and ABC debuted ‘Abbott Elementary.’

Now according to Davis’ lawsuit, both of the show apparently possess similar qualities. Davis claims the “look and feel of the inner-city school, the mockumentary style, unique plot synopsis, set design, and unique characters.”

Davis’ lawsuit also alleges that several of Brunson’s characters are “nearly identical” to her show, and that the plotlines in the first few episodes are also strikingly similar.

The suit claims, “Without [Davis’] permission, license, authority, or consent, [Brunson & ABC] knowingly and illegal used [Davis’] works to create the ‘Abbott Elementary‘ television show.”
