According to a report from CBS News, the incident occurred on March 6 in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood of Chicago. Escobar allegedly entered a vehicle near the 5200 block of West Montana Street, at Laramie Avenue, around 1 p.m. local time, and attempted to rob the occupants of the car.  According to police, gunfire was exchanged between people in the car and someone outside of it. Police say Escobar was shot and reportedly sustained gunshot wounds to her shoulder, back, and hand while she was inside the vehicle. Jermont Terry of CBS 2 reported that video evidence appeared to show Escobar was thrown into the intersection of the street, where bystanders attempted to help her before police arrived. Reports also allege the perpetrators of the shooting threw hundreds of dollars on top of Escobar’s body before leaving her corpse in the intersection.

Escobar was reportedly taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where at some point she was pronounced dead. Iris Alvarez, a source close to Escobar, told CBS Chicago 2 that her heart is “broken into pieces,” when revealing that Escobar’s unborn child had not survived the shooting. During her interview, Alvarez also claimed that the 21-year-old actually reached out to her daughter, in what appeared to be a cry for help, prior to the shooting incident.

“She text my daughter and told my daughter, ‘Please help me, I’m in trouble,’ but my daughter was sleeping,” Alvarez said.

Alvarez said she and her daughter heard four gunshots and added that she watched as an individual dragged Escobar from the car before fleeing the scene.

”We looked out the window and seen that the vehicle — someone opened the driver door, walked around the vehicle, pulled the body out, threw it to the floor and drove off,” Alvarez said before adding, “They threw a bunch of money on top of her. I don’t know if she was into some kind of trouble.”

Alvarez also confirmed that Escobar was seven months pregnant with her first child, a baby girl, at the time of her death. While Alvarez couldn’t confirm whether or not Escobar was in any type of trouble prior to the shooting, she expressed her belief that no amount of trouble should be the cause to shoot a pregnant woman.

“When we got to the hospital, unfortunately, the baby was not able to be saved and she passed away as well,” Alvarez said before concluding, “I don’t care how much trouble you’re in, I feel that for a person to do that to someone, doesn’t have a heart.”
