Two years after the original statue was unveiled to widespread criticism, the Miami Heat have revealed an updated version of their tribute to franchise legend Dwyane Wade.

The team introduced the new sculpture, known as the 2.0 version, outside Kaseya Center on Friday, October 30. The most noticeable change is Wade’s face, which has been redesigned to more closely resemble the former NBA star.

The original statue debuted on October 27, 2024, but quickly became the subject of jokes and criticism from fans and sports commentators. Many argued that the sculpture looked unrecognizable and did not capture Wade’s appearance.

Wade initially expressed surprise and pride when the first statue was unveiled. “I can’t believe it. That’s me back there in an artistic form,” he said at the time. “This is an artistic expression of a moment, one of the biggest moments of Miami Heat history, and I’m just in disbelief that I’m the one that’s chosen.”

However, the reaction from the public eventually led to changes. In an essay shared Friday, Wade acknowledged that revisiting the sculpture was worthwhile and said the updated version was created with Miami fans in mind.

“The 305 deserves to look at that statue and feel the same energy it felt that night,” Wade wrote, referring to Miami by its area code. “And the fans deserve to see themselves in that moment because their noise, their belief and their love were part of what made it possible.”

He continued, “So we listened. We went back to work. And we made the adjustments. I hope when people see it now, they see a better likeness of me. But more than that, I hope they see themselves. Because it may be my likeness, but it will always be our house.”

The statue commemorates one of the most memorable moments of Wade’s career with the Heat. During the original unveiling, the sculpture captured the former guard celebrating in an emotional pose, reflecting his importance to the franchise and the city.

Wade spent the majority of his 16-year NBA career in Miami and became the central figure in the team’s rise to prominence. He helped lead the Heat to three NBA championships, won the 2006 NBA Finals MVP award, and earned 13 All-Star selections.

The new sculpture was created by Omri Amrany and Oscar León of Rotblatt Amrany Studio. The artists are also associated with several other high-profile sports monuments, including Kobe Bryant’s “Black Mamba” statue and the Kobe and Gianna Bryant Memorial Statue.

When the first version was introduced, the criticism came from both ordinary fans and prominent sports personalities. Viewers questioned the facial likeness and debated whether the statue captured Wade’s appearance accurately.

NBA analyst Charles Barkley was among those who expressed displeasure with the original design. The reaction added to the public attention surrounding the statue and helped turn its unveiling into one of the most widely discussed sports-art controversies of the year.

The updated version gives the Heat and Wade an opportunity to move beyond the initial response while preserving the statue’s original purpose: celebrating the relationship between the player, the franchise, and Miami fans.

Wade has repeatedly described his connection to the city as one of the defining parts of his career. Although the statue bears his image, he emphasized that the moment it represents belongs to the entire Miami community.

The Heat’s decision to revise the statue also reflects the unusual nature of modern sports tributes. Once a statue is installed, it is typically considered a permanent monument. In this case, however, the team and the sculptors chose to respond to public feedback and make significant changes.

For Wade, the most important goal was not simply to create a more recognizable face. He said he wanted the revised statue to reflect the fans whose support helped make his career and the franchise’s greatest moments possible.

The new Dwyane Wade statue is now on display outside Kaseya Center, where it will remain a permanent tribute to one of the most influential players in Miami Heat history.
