The quarterback is finished for the 2026 season after doctors found multiple blood clots in his lungs, a development first reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and ESPN’s Adam Schefter. What initially looked like  just a nagging calf problem turned out to be much bigger.

Hurts was first ruled out last Thursday for the Week 6 game because of a superficial clot in his calf. Now the diagnosis is deep vein thrombosis plus bilateral pulmonary emboli, which is the medical term for clots sitting in both lungs. Treatment is expected to take at least three months, so even the most optimistic reading of the calendar leaves little room for a return this year.

The quarterback’s agent, Nicole Lynn, and the team put out a joint statement Monday trying to calm everybody down. They said Hurts is clinically stable with no significant functional limitations, and that his treatment should only involve blood thinners.  “Jalen’s prognosis is very good, and we expect a full recovery.”

The statement also said he can resume contact football once he is off the blood thinners, and that no long-term effects are anticipated. Until then, he stays around the team and keeps conditioning, but no football, period.

Hurts got hurt in the Week 4 game against the Rams, and an ultrasound after the team landed in London showed a superficial clot, but doctors cleared him to play Jacksonville. He took every snap in that game. He went 21 of 40 for 220 yards and a touchdown in a 19-17 loss. A few days later, the Eagles announced he’d miss Carolina, and by the weekend he was on injured reserve.

On a positive note, this is treatable, the doctors sound confident, and the man is only 28. Clots in the lungs can be dangerous when they’re missed, and the fact that these were caught, diagnosed, and put on a treatment plan matters more than any Sunday result. A Super Bowl MVP missing a season hurts. A Super Bowl MVP back healthy next fall is the outcome that counts.
