Free agent wide receiver Stefon Diggs, 32, has signed a reported one-year deal with the Washington Commanders, worth up to $12 million, according to ESPN. It’s also reported that the Maryland native was also contacted by the Kansas City Chiefs, Miami Dolphins, and Las Vegas Raiders. However, he ultimately turned down those deals.

Stefon Diggs Heading Home To Sign With Washington Commanders

This reported deal marks Diggs’ long-desired homecoming to the DMV (District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia). The former New England Patriots star is originally from Gaithersburg, Maryland. He attended high school in Olney, Maryland and played three seasons collegiately at the University of Maryland.

He’s also made it well known hat he’s always wanted to play for his home team. On Wednesday (August 5), NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and ESPN’s Adam Schefter said sources told them about the deal. 

The news arrives as Diggs attended his alma mater’s first fall practice on Wednesday. In a video shared to the Terps Football Instagram, the former Terrapins wide receiver said, “I’m here at the first practice, the first fall practice. They out here getting it in man. Shout out to my Terps, and go Commanders. Let’s go!”

Stefon Diggs Signs With Third Team In Three Seasons

The Commanders deal marks Diggs’ third team in three seasons. In March 2026, he was released by the Patriots after signing a three-year deal in April 2025. Before that, he was with the Houston Texans (2024), Buffalo Bills (2020-2023), and Minnesota Vikings (2015-2019).

In his career, he has been voted to the Pro Bowl four times. The last one took place three years ago. In 2020, he was also named a first-team All-Pro after leading the NFL with 127 receptions.
